three year old grief

We had a couple of fat and happy goldfish, but recently had to say goodbye to one of them.

Before nap time today, Mk said goodnight to Nemo, then looked at me with tears in those darling eyes of hers and said “Mom, the other one died.”

“Yea, he did. I’m sorry, girlfriend. Do you miss him lots?”

She pointed at Nemo and said “Yea, but he’s not sad. He’s not crying. He’s a big girl.Β He’s aΒ big girl like me!”

And she blew him a kiss and headed down the hall to her bedroom.

And my heart melted.
